Eritrea showcased its cycling prowess by topping the medal standings at the CAC African Road Championships, finishing with a total of 16 medals.

Astana Qazaqstan Team rider Henok Mulubrhan made history in the 2024 CAC African Road Cycling Championships held in Eldoret, Kenya by winning the road race championship title for third consecutive time - 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, and 2023 in Accra, Ghana.

Henok secured the gold medal by crossing the line in 3 hours, 46 minutes, and 21 seconds ahead of Emile Van Niekerk of South Africa and Charles Kagimu of Uganda, who placed second and third.

The Horn of Africa nation amassed a total of 16 medals—seven gold, five silver, and four bronze—further solidifying its dominance and esteemed status as a “powerhouse” in African cycling.

“We had a fantastic race with the Eritrean National Team; my teammates worked all day, fully controlling the situation. In the last two kilometers, there were several attacks, and I followed my competitors closely, responding to the accelerations. Eventually, I managed to close down all the attacks, and on the last kilometer, I attacked myself, securing the win. I’m extremely happy and proud to bring this victory to Eritrea. I dedicate this win to my country and my family! This is my third consecutive victory in the African Championships, which no one has achieved before. I’m proud of this and very happy to have done it with the Eritrean National Team”, Henok said after the race. [TN]
