Republican Donald Trump has made a remarkable return to the White House defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the U.S. presidential election to become the 47th president of the United States. This victory completes a dramatic political comeback for Trump after a heated and unpredictable campaign season.

The 2024 race was fraught with challenges for Trump, who faced a criminal conviction, two assassination attempts, and an unexpected opponent switch when President Joe Biden withdrew his candidacy late in the race.

Trump’s path to victory was solidified in the final stretch when he captured the swing state of Wisconsin and its 10 electoral votes, bringing him over the 270 electoral college votes required to secure the presidency.

Trump also appears on track to win the popular vote, an achievement no Republican has attained since George W. Bush in 2004, underscoring his enduring popularity with voters.

Following the election results, world leaders quickly extended their congratulations to the president-elect. Many used the platform X (formerly Twitter) to express their support. Among the first African leaders to reach out was Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.

President Isaias described Trump’s victory as “historic” and emphasized that it comes “at a very crucial time when global peace is of paramount importance.” He conveyed best wishes for Trump’s success in addressing these critical global challenges.

President Isaias also expressed optimism for “a new chapter of fruitful and constructive ties of cooperation” between Eritrea and the United States under Trump’s leadership. [TN]
